The Division of Landscape Architecture

Landscape architecture is the art of combining function, beauty, sustainability and economy in the design of man's build environment – in a broad sense, the landscape of man. The subject covers a wide field, from regional and city spatial planning to the design of ur ban spaces, with the awareness of the mutual dependence between these different levels. At the Unit for Landscape Architecture, we strive to increase people's quality of life by teaching, research and development of landscapes and of processes that are meaningful, beautiful and sustainable.

Landscape architecture is an active form of knowledge, characterized by a reflective way of synthesizing knowledge and values from different stakeholders and actors into concrete action. The area thus covers a variety of scientific disciplines, demanding a multidisciplinary research and educational environment. Technical, natural, and social science as well as art science is represented. Trans-disciplinary research between the groups and themes at the department is developed in our work.

Landscape architecture encompasses the design of future changes, where the development of the built environment in ur ban and rural settings affects and is affected by the characteristics and values of natural landscapes into a sustainable development for man as well as for nature. Management and development of the already built is an important aspect, respecting history as well as the future.

All this demands knowledge and development of qualities and attractions of the natural landscape, of green structures, of ur ban and rural environments along with knowledge of man's needs and relations. The development of landscape architecture includes theories, methods as well as implementation.
