The Division of Rural Development

Rural development is an interdisciplinary subject which focuses on the particular preconditions and problems in rural areas. The subject includes analysis and descriptions of processes of change in rural areas, as well as methods and activities aiming at local and regional development.

Agroecology is a scientific theme within the subject rural development. It's the science of applying ecological concepts and principles to the design, development, and management of sustainable agricultural systems. The strating point is that all living systems depend on and have an exchange with the surroundings. People, society and nature are considered as contributory and reciprocal actors in the systems.

Research
Our research concerns rural development aspects on i.a. natural resources management, policy and governance issues and strategies for survival and improved livelihoods. The inter-relationships between local actors and actors on other societal levels are central in our research.

Education

The programmes and courses in rural development we offer focus on the concepts of sustainability and development. The particular conditions and differentiated developments characterising rural areas in the light of global changes in economy and politics. Interrelationships between rural and urban areas. Natural resources management, landscapes and ecosystem production, including different perspectives on socio-ecological systems. The importance of socio-economic preconditions and changing livelihoods for development processes. Relationships between local actors, and local society, and institutions at other societal levels,

Work with local and regional development of rural areas in differing contexts, in the North as well as the South.

Collaboration

New knowledge develop when theory meet reality. For that reason the department continously operate different kinds of projects, with the purpose of mediating, taking care of and developing new knowledge. During our courses we often invite practitians as lecturers, to be able to share their experiences and knowledge. We can take part in your projects in many different ways, for example with lectures, seminars, workshops, evaluations and/or analyses. Over the years we have built a wide network within the subject rural development, nationally as well as internationally.
