A study of manifest and planned processes aiming at transforming place identity.
Yvonne Gunnarsdotter (environmental communication) and Cecilia Waldenström (Rural development and Agroecology) collaborate with research groups from the universities in Tromsø, Rovaniemi and Reykjavik in a comparative study of place re-invention processes in the Nordic periphery.
In the wake of the transformations in the Nordic peripheries, conscious processes of re-vitalization and re-identification are increasingly drawn on to support development. In this study we explore how such processes have emerged in the various locations, and how are they perceived by actors in local society. Which actors have been central in the realisation of these processes? Governance is a central concept in the project.
The two Swedish cases are the presentation of Pajala municipality as a cultural municipality and the declaration of Övertorneå municipality as an ecological municipality.
The project is funded by NordRegio and led by the Department of Planning and Community Studies, University of Tromsø.
